Counters were made between 1725-1840 in Canton, China for Western Royalty
and Nobility. Shapes of round, square, oblong, and fish denoted the value. The
Europeans used them for card play and would order their gaming counters
along with their dinner sets since they were typically engraved with the family
crest or initials to match the porcelain order. In the 1840s the Chinese began
making Silk Winders (today we call them thread bobins).
